David Yates first delved into the deep sound of the didgeridoo in 2009 with his teacher Shine Edgar, who learned from Noongar elders in Australia. After a single private lesson, circular breathing simply clicked, and David began playing with a number of Vancouver’s local world musicians including Shine, Pepe Danza, Alcvin Ramos, and Kurai Nyamukapa. The world fusion collective Naad also invited him to join as a performer, a project which has evolved throughout the years and included a wide range of musicians and instrumentation. Around the same time, he began documenting his learning process on YouTube as “Breathwood,” never expecting that this would eventually lead to recognition around the world for his casual but clear teaching style. A few years later, David began working at Gandharva Loka, the world music store, where he entered the realm of sound healing and sound journeys. It was there that he began to weave an assortment of other powerful instruments into his repertoire, including the handpan, native flute, fujara, kalimba, gong, mouth harp, and more. David now plays for a wide range of sound, meditation, dance, and yoga events in spaces throughout Vancouver and beyond, including virtually. He also teaches private lessons both in person and online, and has a loyal student and supporter base on Patreon where he offers weekly videos, private lessons, a secret FB group, and more!
